The Enneagram: Know Yourself Better, Love More Deeply

Understand your motivations,
needs and relationship patterns.
  • Why do certain situations evoke such intense reactions in us?
  • Why do we tend to repeat certain patterns in our relationships?
  • Why do some behaviours reassure us, while others leave us feeling unsettled?
Our reactions are not always a matter of conscious choice.
They may be shaped by our personal history, our experiences, our deeper needs and the patterns we have gradually developed to adapt to the world around us.
Understanding these patterns is a first step towards greater self-awareness and a more conscious way of relating to others. The Enneagram offers a framework for exploring them.

The Enneagram: A Framework for Deeper Self-Understanding

The Enneagram is a framework for understanding personality that identifies nine broad patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving.
Each type offers a distinct perspective on the motivations, needs, concerns and responses that may shape our behaviour.
Rather than simply describing us as reserved or outgoing, organised or spontaneous, this approach explores what lies beneath our behaviour: what drives us, what we seek to protect, what reassures us and what we may try to avoid.
Two people may behave in similar ways while being guided by very different motivations. One may seek recognition, another security, while a third may value autonomy above all else.
Understanding these motivations can help us see ourselves and our reactions in a new light.

Why Do Certain Patterns Keep Recurring in Our Relationships?

Our relationships can offer particular insight into how we think, feel and respond.
Emotional closeness, expectations, differences in sensitivity and moments of uncertainty can bring out reactions we do not always understand.
We may find ourselves:
  • constantly seeking reassurance;
  • struggling to express our needs or disagreements;
  • avoiding uncomfortable conversations;
  • trying to control situations to feel secure;
  • expecting our partner to intuit how we feel;
  • putting ourselves second to preserve harmony.
These behaviours do not define who we are. They may, however, reveal relationship patterns worth exploring.
The Enneagram can help us examine some of these tendencies by drawing attention to the motivations and needs behind them.
In particular, it invites us to distinguish what we do from what drives us to do it.
This distinction matters: it allows us to move beyond observing our behaviour on the surface towards a deeper understanding of ourselves.

Seeing Yourself Beyond a Type or Label
One of the risks of discovering a personality framework is the temptation to explain everything through it.
“I’m this type, so this is simply how I am.”
That perspective can quickly become limiting.
A personality type cannot capture our personal history, our identity or our full capacity for growth.
The Enneagram is best approached as an invitation to explore, rather than a basis for judgement or a fixed definition of who we are.
Nor can it determine, on its own, whether two people are compatible or whether a relationship will succeed. Its value lies elsewhere: in helping us recognise habitual responses, understand certain needs and gain perspective on our reactions.
The aim is not to change our personality, but to gain greater freedom in how we respond.

Understand Yourself Better to Understand Others More Deeply
As we develop a deeper understanding of our own patterns, the way we see others can also evolve.
We may gradually recognise that everyone has their own way of interpreting a situation, expressing emotions, responding to a need or experiencing a relationship.
A difference in approach does not necessarily reflect a fundamental disagreement. A response that differs from our own is not necessarily a sign of rejection or a lack of interest.
Gaining this perspective can help us question assumptions and create space for more constructive dialogue.
It can also help us express our expectations more clearly, acknowledge our limits and approach differences with greater openness and ease.
This work extends beyond romantic relationships. It can also enrich our connections with family, friends and colleagues.
How Can the Enneagram Support Your Journey of Self-Discovery?
The Enneagram becomes most meaningful when explored within a guided, personal process that takes your individual circumstances into account.
It is not simply a matter of completing a questionnaire, receiving a result and adopting it as a fixed identity.
Instead, the process involves exploring the perspectives it offers, considering them in light of your lived experience and reflecting on what they reveal about your patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving.
Within individual coaching, this exploration can help you:
Identify your motivations and needs
Gain a deeper understanding of your habitual responses
Recognise your protective patterns
Become more aware of your relationship expectations

What if the problem lay not with the subject, but with the system of perception into which the subject is compelled to fit?
Most scientific and philosophical approaches regard reality as something that exists independently, and consciousness as a more or less faithful mirror. Yet this conception overlooks something fundamental: the collective, historical, cultural, linguistic and attentional filters that precede and condition every way in which the world is given form.
What if what you call “normal” were merely a code of obedience learned in childhood?
We often think of normality as self-evident: a form of shared common sense, a reasonable way of behaving that we follow naturally. It seems obvious, as though it were embedded in the very logic of the world.

Normality: A Choice, a Form of Conditioning… or a State of Collective Slumber?
The more we adapt, the further we move away from our inner perception. This dissonance creates a tension that we soothe through repetitive behaviours: scrolling, constant performance, self-censorship and emotional conformity. Through continual imitation, normality becomes a compulsive mechanism. And every compulsion is a form of dependency that remains unnamed.
You never chose your addiction—it saw you before you saw yourself.
If the Psychooptic interpretation of dependence were to be summarised, it might be expressed as follows: what we call “addiction” is not a behavioural pathology, but an invisible fidelity to an old prediction.

The Observer
The act of observation never provides immediate access to reality; it is the product of a system of inversion inherent in all perception.
